Abstract

Pop quizzes are a useful strategic tool for keeping students engaged with the class and its content. However, traditional pop quizzes often heighten student anxiety and can promote a “cram, test, and dump” approach that undermines deep learning. This paper introduces an innovative approach, termed “pop quiz with a twist” (PQT); it integrates low-stakes, two-stage quizzes with student grading and immediate, detailed instructor feedback. Using rigorous qualitative analysis of student comments, supplemented by instructor reflections, the paper critically evaluates the effectiveness of PQT as an assessment tool and a catalyst for enhancing the classroom learning environment. Findings suggest that PQT is an effective assessment tool that can positively impact student engagement, foster deeper conceptual understanding, promote peer collaboration, reduce test-related anxiety, and contribute to a more interactive and supportive learning environment. The paper also explores implementation challenges and outlines directions for future research, highlighting PQT’s adaptability and potential applicability across postsecondary educational contexts.
