Abstract

In Quebec, with the implementation of the Ethics and Religious Culture Program, the deconfessionalization of public education was attained. However, this major change required equally major
changes in teacher training practices. This is the subject of
the present paper. First, we present an overview of this
program. Second, we confront this program with the
actual training followed by the teachers. Finally we highlight the significant gap between what was announced
in terms of training and the training in fact provided to
teachers and future teachers. The paper suggests that this
gap is still a major obstacle to the teachers' appropriation of
the program and, consequently, to its effective
implementation.
