Abstract

My Master's program in Curriculum Studies has focused on young children's play and teachers' facilitating role. An important challenge noted by Packard, and one that is true for many of the First Nations Early Childhood Educators with whom I work, is "that for a parent to be attentive to nurturing her child's learning potential, it is important that she see herself as an effective learner" (Klebanov et al. 1998, p. XX). Using a narrative inquiry method, I will explore adult teaching and learning strategies that build self-confidence and nurture understandings of children as competent learners. In this session, participants will be provided an opportunity to explore this understanding through actively engaging in a play based learning activity which mirrors "play and exploration" for children.
