About the Journal

Focus and Scope

Education Matters: The Journal of Teaching and Learning is an open-access peer-reviewed publication forum for research in education for and by scholars throughout the world including new scholars from the University of Saskatchewan. As such, its primary objective is to foster connections among researchers to build a coherent knowledge base in education across geographic and intellectual borders while at the same time conveying a sense of local place related to the Canadian and Saskatchewan context. Contributions from graduate students are particularly encouraged.

Education Matters publishes the following:

  • Reports of qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-method studies related to the discipline of education
  • Multidisciplinary research including education as a foundational context
  • Diverse viewpoints on teaching and learning

Peer Review Process

Submissions are initially screened by the General Managing Editor. The initial screening generally occurs within 6 weeks. Successful research articles (both invited and unsolicited) will then move on to the peer review process, undergoing a double-blind review. Essays, book reviews, and artistic works, such as poetry, are reviewed by the journal's editorial team, unless otherwise specified in correspondence with individual authors.

Submissions whose content is clearly inappropriate for EM, or that deviate from the instructions for authors, will not be considered for review. Authors will receive a general form letter explaining whether or not the manuscript is being sent out for review, following the initial editorial screening.

Student authors from the University of Saskatchewan will receive detailed feedback regarding their manuscripts should these manuscripts not be accepted during the screening stage. Within a context of general scholarship, this journal has a mandate to support the publication of local graduate student research, and students should note particular workshops offered throughout the school year for article preparation assistance.

Submissions are judged on the basis of their appropriateness for EM, potential contribution to the field, theoretical soundness, scholarly and methodological rigor, and quality of presentation. Submissions accepted for publication typically undergo more than one round of author revision to address reviewers’ suggestions and concerns. Please note that while every opportunity will be taken to ensure author participation in the editing process, final copyediting changes may be made before publication to ensure APA adherence throughout all submissions.
