Student Activism and National Development: The Philippine Setting

Résumé

This paper examines two questions relating to student activism in the Philippines. First, why students in this particular setting, at least for most of the years following the second world wa:r, appear to have been more passive politically than their counterparts in some other parts of the world ?1 Secondly, if recent demonstrat ions in the Philippines can be regarded as symptomatic of bas'ic changes auguring more effective activism on the part of Filipino students, what factors might account for this change? It would be well at this point to define this paper's frame of reference in terms of time as well as in terms of subject.
