Education and the Technostate

This is about technology, its implications for society, for the individual, hence for education. The present purpose is fourfold: (1) to contribute to a clearer understanding of the technology, (2) to review the relationship of technology to other sectors of the culture, (3) to observe the individual's life-space in the Technostate,1 (4) to suggest some conclusions about education for the citizen and for the specialist. Compression of the subject into the space allotted here is not undertaken without sensitivity to the violence that brevity might do to homage. Yet the attempt is prompted by a certain urgency currently arising from the involvement of technology with education, particularly in the secondary school. Statements are made and developments undertaken which appear to reflect pressing necessity for better understanding and wider agreement about fundamental meanings and issues.
