Abstract

This paper is a record of interviews and observations made during a visit of nearly three months to the People's Republic of China. In the introductory paragraphs. the educational problems faced by the new government in 1949 are briefly described . A discussion of the educational problems that arose during the first two decades of the People's Republic, problems which led to the Cultural Revolution , follows . Observations of pre-school education, primary, secondary, and university education are given. The focus of the paper is upon the ideological core of the contemporary Chinese educational systems and its integration with the purposes of a society committed, so fa r, to the practical implementation of egalitarianism and cultural unity.
