Abstract

The majority of high school students in Alberta do not
have access to French immersion programs of the same quality.
There is a wide range in the amount of instruction given in French
and a wide diversity in the courses offered in French at the high
school level. The rate of attrition seems to be high especially in the
science programs. To study this theory a questionnaire was
distributed to all administrators ofFrench Immersion High Schools
in Alberta. The objectives of the study were to describe the situation
in Alberta by indicating (a) the number of French Immersion High
Schools in Alberta offering science courses in French, (b) what
courses are being offered in French in French Immersion High
Schools in Alberta, and (c) the reasons why schools decide to offer,
or not to offer, high school science courses in French.
