Abstract

Marriage is losing ground in Canada. Although what is probably one of the oldest institutions in the world is not about to disappear, the meaning of marriage has undergone a transformation. This article identifies the perception of marriage among Franco-Ontarian student teachers. Several student teachers report that marriage is a shared personal project; the legal constraints as well as the social commitments associated with matrimony are generally rejected. This position is mitigated however by student teachers who profess religious convictions.
