One Room School: The Summer Institute in Program Evaluation

Abstract

This article describes the Summer Institute in Program Evaluation conceived and organized in partnership by University of Manitoba faculty members, four partnering organizations in the health and social-service sector, and a university student group. It explains the model of learning, which involves the development of real-life evaluation plans in a week-long intensive course that includes university students and community participants. The article concludes by detailing a series of lessons learned.

Le présent article décrit le Summer Institute in Program Evaluation (programme de formation d’été en évaluation de programme) conçu et organisé en partenariat par des professeurs de l’Université du Manitoba, quatre organisations du secteur de la santé et des services sociaux, et un groupe d’étudiants universitaires. Il explique le modèle d’apprentissage, qui inclut l’élaboration de plans d’évaluation concrets pendant un cours intensif d’une semaine auquel participent des étudiants universitaires et des acteurs de la communauté. Nous identifions une série d’enseignements tirés de cette expérience.

Author Biographies

Javier Mignone, The University of Manitoba

Javier is Associate Professor in the Department of Community Health Sciences at the University of Manitoba. He teaches program evaluation at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

 

Aynslie Hinds, The University of Manitoba

Aynslie recently completed her PhD in the Department of Community Health Sciences at the University of Manitoba.  She is the co-chair of Community Hub - Information and Research Partnerships (CHIRP), which matches university students to community-based organizations to work on research and evaluation projects. 

Migliardi Paula, Sexuality Education Resource Centre

Paula is the Research and Evaluation Coordinator with the Sexuality Education Resources Centre MB, and a PhD Candidate in Anthropology at the University of Manitoba. She has many years of experiences with evaluation and applied research in sexuality related programs.

Marianne Krawchuk, United Way Winnipeg

Marianne is the Senior Manager, Family Resource Centre Initiative at United Way Winnipeg. Prior to this, she was the Evaluation & Outcome Measurement Manager with a focus on building evaluation capacity internally, and with agency partners. Marianne holds a Master’s Degree in Sociology, is a Credentialed Evaluator and Past-President of the Canadian Evaluation Society - Manitoba Chapter.

Bohdanna Kinasevych, Health in Common

Bohdanna is the Director of Evaluation at Health in Common, a non-for-profit planning and evaluation agency in Manitoba. She holds a Master of Science from the University of Manitoba, Department of Community Health Sciences, and is a Credentialed Evaluator of the Canadian Evaluation Society.

Karen A Duncan, The University of Manitoba

Karen is an Associate Professor in the Department of Community Health Sciences at the University of Manitoba and a professional home economist. Her research focuses on the economic and financial security of families and individuals, and she has a particular interest in the evaluation of programs that build financial capability.
