Abstract

New or innovative assessment practices are often presented in the literature as superior ways of doing things that all evaluators should use. However, the innovations advocated do not refer to novelties in relation to historically attested assessment practices or to pedagogical ideas, as a careful reading of these texts reveals. Rather, this position paper postulates that, far from being positive, the idea of innovative practices has negative consequences for our attitudes towards past and current assessment practices. This idea also contributes to a fragmented and insufficient knowledge of the history of assessment and of pedagogical ideas related to assessment.
