Abstract

In the early childhood education context, children’s engagement in their classroom learning activities plays a determining role in their school readiness. Recognized as a multidimensional construct, engagement has been the subject of numerous studies which offer varying perspectives on its definition and conceptualization. This article provides an overview of engagement, often studied in elementary school, while identifying some research specific to preschool and kindergarten education. First, a summary of the definitions of engagement is presented. Second, two theoretical models of engagement will be presented. Finally, engagement will be explored as specifically studied and measured in preschool and kindergarten.
