Abstract

A recent United Nations study on the effects of the arms race on daily life should invite us to think about the relationship between increasing global militarism and children. In 1981 , $1 million was spent on weapons every minute of every hour of every day (U .N. , 1983 , p. 7) , and according to UNICEF director James Grant, every year twelve to thirteen million children (the equivalent of one hundred and twenty Hiroshimas) die from hunger and malnutrition largely because funds for social and economic development are everywhere being diverted to the stockpiling of arms and the development of standing armies (Toh, p. 59).
