Abstract

In this paper, I examine the connection between the education of autonomous and critical individuals and the idea of imagination, particularly Dewey's conceptualization of it. I try to elucidate some characteristics of Dewey's thought by contrasting Dewey and one of his critics, Reinhold Niebuhr, whose view makes an interesting contrast to Dewey's in some important regards while being in agreement with Dewey in the most basic level; they both believe in the validity of educating the autonomous individuals.
