Abstract

Li terature fo r adolescents is difficult to define: like the concept of adolescence itself, its boundaries are fuzzy and continuall y shi fting . Fu11hermore, reading is such a personal and idiosyncratic act ivity that it can never be adequately categorized by chronological age or period of psycho logical development. Some young adolescents will read traditional children's literature and ado lescent literature, while the ir older counterpa11s may occas ionall y or even frequently favor the latest adult bestseller. The books I intend to speak of in this paper are the works of fic tion written spec ifica lly for young people ranging in age from about twelve to seventeen years
