About the Journal

Arctic is a publication of the Arctic Institute of North America (AINA), University of Calgary. AINA was created by an Act of Parliament in 1945 as a nonprofit tax-exempt research and educational organization and Arctic was first published soon after, in 1948.

Now in its seventh decade of continuous publishing, Arctic contains contributions from any area of scholarship dealing with the polar and subpolar regions of the world. Articles in Arctic present original research and have withstood intensive peer review. Arctic also publishes reviews of new books on the North, profiles of significant people, places and northern events, and topical commentaries. 

Arctic also contains the general interest section InfoNorth, which contains a contributed essay of northern interest and Institute news. To obtain an idea of the subjects covered by InfoNorth essays please look at the last item in each issue of Arctic since March 1997.

A subscription to Arctic will keep you informed of current thought and directions that cross disciplinary boundaries, enabling a broader understanding of today's rapidly changing circumpolar world. Arctic is distributed to members and organizational subscribers quarterly.

Arctic moved to an online-only format in 2020.

Focus and Scope

Arctic is a peer-reviewed, primary research journal that publishes the results of scientific research from all areas of circumpolar scholarship. Original scholarly papers in the physical, social, and biological sciences, humanities, engineering, and technology are included, as are book reviews, commentaries, letters to the editor, and profiles of significant people, places, or events of northern interest. The journal is multidisciplinary; any manuscript submitted for publication should, therefore, be of potential appeal not only to specialists but also to readers whose principal interests do not coincide directly with the subject addressed in the paper.
