Journal Launch: Submissions Open

2023-03-31

The Faculty of Social Work at the University of Calgary is excited to announce the launch of a new open access journal, Transformative Social Work, which is live now! This scholarly refereed journal is designed to advance knowledge mobilization in the field of social work, with a future-focused social justice perspective on theory, research, education, practice, and policy.

Transformative Social Work recognizes the intersectional identities of our global population and aims to transform social work research, practice, and policy to meet local and global challenges associated with climate change and environmental degradation, social and health inequities, workplace issues, Indigenous reconciliation, poverty and sustainable development. The journal offers a publishing space to consider ‘transformative social work’ through a critical and proactive social agenda, that contemplates equity, diversity, inclusion, decolonization, and other social justice considerations.

The journal welcomes submissions from all areas of social work and aims to advance theoretical understanding, interrogate policy, and inform practice. There are four article types accepted by the journal: Original Manuscripts, Brief Notes, Voices from the Field, and Letters to the Editor.

Original Manuscripts are full-length articles of up to 7,000 words in length, Brief Notes are up to 2,000 words on topics such as reports of research in progress, descriptions of policy, and current programs and hot issues. Voices from the Field is a section that welcomes submissions from practitioners and field educators about their experiences in the field, with articles up to 2000 words in length. Letters to the Editor provide readers with the opportunity to comment on issues covered in the journal or other points of interest to social workers (no longer than 2 pages and may or may not be published).

We are committed to promoting access to knowledge, and we are pleased to announce that Transformative Social Work is an open access journal, available online free of charge. The journal publishes Canadian and international articles in English and French. The journal encourages authors to make the relevance to or implication for social work explicit in all submissions.

We are excited to welcome submissions to Transformative Social Work. We invite all scholars, practitioners, and educators to submit their work and help us advance knowledge mobilization in the field of social work. General submissions are now open, with the goal of publishing the first general issue in 2023/2024.

Submissions are also open for our special issue on the impacts of the COVID-19 Pandemic (expected September 2023), and a call for our second special issue on Field Education will be forthcoming in the next month.
