CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS - Special Issue

2026-02-12

Gender-based violence constitutes a major social problem and public health issue worldwide, whether in the form of gender-based violence, sexual violence, or intimate partner violence. A broad range of initiatives, particularly within social intervention and public policy, have emerged to raise awareness and intervene with diverse populations in order to eradicate this issue. Among these initiatives is the development of “culturally sensitive and appropriate practices” to support marginalized populations often abandoned by public services, prevention programs, and state institutions. Moreover, there has been growing interest in alternative forms of justice such as transformative and restorative justice as responses to gender-based violence. Alternative justice models are increasingly being discussed in mainstream media in Québec and across Canada to address gender-based violence, reflecting their growing popularization among the general public. These developments have sparked debates and concerns regarding the institutionalization of such alternative justice practices. Indigenous, Black and racialized communities are profoundly affected by the legacies of colonization and slavery; these legacies have led to the “over-criminalization” and “under-protection” by state institutions.

Transformative Social Work invites submissions on the general theme of Justice, Racialized People and Gender-Based Violence, and on the following sub-themes:

  • The conceptualizations of justice among racialized communities ;
  • Socio-historical perspectives on the support systems for racialized victims and perpetrators of gender-based violence ;
  • Forms of resistance among racialized victims facing state/institutional, reproductive, gynecological, intimate partner, and/or sexual violence ;
  • Culturally sensitive prevention and intervention with racialized women and communities who have experienced gender-based violence ;
  • Ethical, practical, methodological, and/or epistemological issues surrounding research on gender-based violence in/within racialized communities.

Articles may adopt a Québec, Canadian, international, or comparative perspective, and may be submitted in either French or English.
