Survival Exercise

You and your companions have just survived the crash of a small plane. Both the pilot and co-pilot were killed in the crash.

It is mid-January, and you are in Northern Canada. The daily temperature is 25 degrees below zero Fahrenheit, and the nighttime temperature is 40 degrees below zero Fahrenheit.  There is snow on the ground and the area has many trees and woods. There are also several creeks crossing the area.

The nearest town is 20 miles away. You are all dressed in city clothes appropriate for a business meeting. Your group of survivors has managed to salvage the following items:

____  A ball of steel wool

        ____  A small axe

        ____  A loaded .45-caliber pistol

        ____  Can of Crisco shortening

        ____  Newspapers (one per person)

        ____  Cigarette lighter (without fluid)

____  Extra shirt and pants for each survivor

        ____  20 x 20 ft piece of heavy-duty canvas

____  A sectional air map made of plastic

        ____  A compass

____  Family-size chocolate bars (one per person)

As a team, use what you know about the alpine survival to rate each item in the above list according to how important it would be for your survival.

Number the items 1 through 11, with 1 as the most important item, and 11 as the least important item.
